Reverend Teijo Munnich
Reverend Munnich is founder and Dharma Teacher for the Zen Center of Asheville and Dharma Teacher for Charlotte Zen Meditation Society. She is a Dharma Heir of Dainin Katagiri Roshi. Teijo studied with him from 1975 until his death in 1990. She received formal training at Hokyoji (Catching the Moon Zen Mountain Center) in Southeastern Minnesota, Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in Carmel Valley, CA and Hosshinji Sodo in Obama, Japan. In 2002 she initiated her long-time vision of establishing a women's monastic center by founding Great Tree Zen Temple. In 2005 Great Tree opened its gates at 679 Lower Flat Creek Road, Alexander, NC. Sesshins, study groups, and workshops that include men and families are also offered in addition to women's retreats--see their website for a schedule (www.greattreetemple.org). Teijo continues to explore the breadth of Soto Zen practice, as described by Dogen Zenji, in ways that are not currently understood or practiced--opening our hearts and minds to cultivate an expansive and integrated awareness.
